At Lumi, we care about your personal information, so we have prepared this Privacy Policy to explain how we collect, use, and share it. This Privacy Policy applies to the Lumi mobile applications and related backend services (the “Service”). The Service features AI characters with whom users can chat, take voice and phone calls, and practice languages. By using the Service, you agree with Lumi’s collection, use, and sharing of your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
Please note that Lumi is constantly testing and improving our product. Any features discussed in this Privacy Policy may not be available to all users or in all jurisdictions.
When you use the Service, Lumi may collect the following personal information about you.
To register for a Lumi account, you provide an email address and either a password of your choosing or credentials from a supported social login provider, such as Apple or Google. If you register using a social login, Lumi may receive your email address (which may be a private relay address generated by Apple), a user identifier, and a display name from that provider.
Lumi also offers an option during onboarding to use the Service without providing an email address or third-party login credential. Choosing this option creates an anonymous account on your device, identified only by an opaque, device-bound identifier generated for your installation and not associated with any of your personal contact information. You can upgrade an anonymous account to a regular account at any time from Account → Create account; doing so links a Google, Apple, or email credential to the same identifier so that your onboarding choices, learning progress, gamification balances (including unspent Lucky Stars), and any active subscription are preserved.
When you sign up for the first time, Lumi presents an onboarding flow that collects the following personalization information so that the character's responses can be tailored to you: a display name of your choice (which does not have to be your real name), a list of interests you select from a preset list, the language you choose to learn, and a short self-assessment of your starting level in that language (such as your familiarity with the language's writing system).
After onboarding, you may optionally provide your birth month and day (no birth year) from Account → Profile; this is used for birthday-themed touches such as birthday greetings from the character. This field is optional and can be set only once.
Lumi does not ask for, or store, your full date of birth, government-issued identification, real name, phone number, contacts, calendar, or precise location.
You can edit your display name from Account → Profile. The interests selected during onboarding, and your birth month and day once set, are not currently editable in the app; if you wish to change them, you can delete your Lumi account from Account → Delete Account and create a new one. The self-rated starting level you provide for a language is used to calibrate learning content and may be adjusted automatically as you practice. You can delete your Lumi account at any time.
After you register, a minimal profile is created for you so that the Service can show your name and learning progress. Your profile information is private to you and to Lumi. Lumi does not provide public profiles, follower lists, leaderboards, friend systems, or any other feature that exposes your account or activity to other users.
The Service offers several AI-powered interaction modes with the AI character:
